LIVING WATER DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Faith in the Tempestuous time

25TH , JUNE 2022

- Day of the seafarer

EXTRA READING FOR TODAY:  Psalms 74-77

READ:  Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”

36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.

37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.

38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

EXPOSITION

'Tempest' relates to an unpleasant situations that creates fear. It is characterized by strong and turbulent or conflicting emotions, actions or behaviour. The disciples of Jesus found themselves in such a situation. These was a great windstorm (tempest), such that the waves beat into the boat, to the extent that it was already filled up. The disciples were sore afraid, then they called upon Jesus Christ to intervene in the turbulent situation. He did, most amazingly!

No one is immune from the storm of life (c.f. Jn.16v33, Phil. 1v29; 1 Pet.5v10). Tempestuous time can be likened to a time when one faces difficulty or uneasy moment in life. They are the times when storm of life is boisterous against one. The storm can come in form of having to cope with difficult spouse, having a stubborn, wayward and adamant child, long-time childlessness, illness, bankruptcy, unemployment, constant nightmares, etc. The tempestuous time should drive us into deeper dependence on Christ, and have deeper relationship with Him. In the midst of all these, our Redeemer lives, and He is able to save and deliver as many as call upon Him (Rom.10v13).

The Disciples of Christ cried to Him when they were faced with the tempest. They had thought He was sleeping, but He couldn't have left them to waste away (Psa. 121v4). Why not cry to Master to save and deliver you from Satan, sin, and sorrow now? Activate your faith in Christ in tempestuous time. Faith is trust or confidence in the absolute ability of God to help. Be thankful for that turbulent moment of your life,  for it draw you closer to God. Ask for the grace and strength to overcome. See God in that situation as the Master of oceans and storms, even as today marks the Day of the Seafarer; He will calm the boisterous wind (c.f.. Exodus 14v13). He will come through for you.
