FROM GRACE TO DISGRACE

19TH  , JUNE 2022

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Thessalonians 1-3

TEXT:              2 Kings 12:17-21

17 Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath, and took it; then Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things that his fathers, Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own sacred things, and all the gold found in the treasuries of the house of the Lord and in the king’s house, and sent them to Hazael king of Syria. Then he went away from Jerusalem.

19 Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

20 And his servants arose and formed a conspiracy, and killed Joash in the house of the Millo, which goes down to Silla.

21 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, struck him. So he died, and they buried him with his fathers in the City of David. Then Amaziah his son reigned in his place.

KEY VERSE:

“And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers...had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem."   -  2 Kings 12:18

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Do not allow disgrace to displace grace in your life.

THE MESSAGE:

The world is full of stories of people who fell from grace. They started with nothing in life but God favoured them. Yet they forgot their humble beginnings. American actor, Gary Coleman, was such a favoured man. He was adopted as a child by a white wealthy American family. He became a television star at the age of 10. But by the time he died at forty-two, he had become a poor, violently angry man.

Same could be said of King Jehoash. He was graciously rescued from death from his wicked grandmother, Queen Athaliah. He was brought to the throne by Jehoiada who mentored and guided him. No sooner had Jehoiada died than Jehoash betrayed his mentor. He gave all the hallowed things that his father and grandfather kept in the temple to Hazael to appease him against an attack on Jerusalem. In 2 Chronicles 24:21-25, Jehoash went into idolatry and killed the son of his mentor who tried to warn him against idolatry. He was finally killed by his own servants who felt betrayed by his killing the son of his benefactor.

Some of us were on a fast lane to hell and self-destruction when the gospel of Jesus rescued us. But success became the undoing of some believers. Satan makes such people forget their inglorious past as they concentrate on their achievements. That is why the Bible warns, "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall" (1 Corinthians 10:12).

Whenever you are tempted to think too highly of yourself, remember the story of Jehoash who started in grace but ended in disgrace. That must not be your own story. Watch and pray!

DO HAVE A BLESSED DAY
