LIVING WATER DAILY DEVOTIONAL
THE EVIL OF FRUITLESSNESS

19TH , JULY 2022

EXTRA READING FOR TODAY:  Proverbs 30-31, Ecclesiastes 1

READ:  Luke 13:6-9 and John 15:1

Luke 13:6-9

6 And He told them this parable: A certain man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find [any].

7 So he said to the vinedresser, See here! For these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue also to use up the ground [to deplete the soil, intercept the sun, and take up room]?

8 But he replied to him, Leave it alone, sir, [just] this one more year, till I dig around it and put manure [on the soil].

9 Then perhaps it will bear fruit after this; but if not, you can cut it down and out.

John 15v1

I am the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.

MEMORISE: “I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.” - John 15:5

EXPOSITION

Jesus shows from He cursed the fruitless fig tree that He doesn't take fruitlessness lightly. Because the fig tree had no fruit on it for Jesus to eat, it would cease producing fruit for life. It immediately withered off (Matt. 21v19). May you not be barren, in Jesus name. Amen. Not that Jesus intended to be too hard on that fig tree, but He wants to show us that God isn't happy with lack of productiveness (c.f.. Isa.5v1-7).

Every visionary organisation values productivity. Productivity stems from the passion to maximise profit. Some economic experts have linked the economic downturn in many countries, developing and less developed, to lack of production and too much dependance on foreign goods. Make sure you are productive if you will make headway in life, lest you be redundant.

It is sad to be a fruitless Christian. Such Christian are everywhere, not bringing converts to Christ. Today's devotion challenges us to be productive, so that we can become sources of blessing to all. No one wants to employ a non-productive and non-performing worker. The vineyard owner in today's text could no longer tolerate the fruitlessness of the fig tree because it has wasted his time, resourses, stretching to its limits, his patience, hence the decision to cut it down.

We see the God of mercy in action, giving a second chance. Jesus is our advocate before God always. Hence, we have a great opportunity to add value to mankind, and bring glory to God. You will no longer use up time, space and resources without bringing forth the right fruit, in Jesus name. Stay glued to Jesus to be able to bring forth enduring and abundant fruit (Jn.15v4).

PRAYER POINT:

1. Lord, make me a godly fruit-bearing believer to Your glory and benefits of others, so as not to be cut down for fruitlessness.

2. Lord, help to continually populate Your kingdom as I depopulate hell, in Jesus name.

3. Pray for CAC Olutimehin Region, our father in the Lord, the superintendent, and its officers at the various levels, as led by the Spirit of God.
