LIVING WATER DAILY DEVOTIONAL
DON’T PARADE YOURSELF

29TH , JULY 2022

EXTRA READING FOR TODAY:  Isaiah 24-28

READ:  1 Samuel 17:55-58

55 When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.

56 And the king said, Inquire whose son the stripling is.

57 When David returned from killing Goliath the Philistine, Abner brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58 And Saul said to him, Whose son are you, young man? And David answered, I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.

EXPOSITION

The natural man loves self-promotion, self-propagation, self-glorification; "Don't you know who I am?" But God says, "Let others blow your trumpet; not you." Pride is a spiritual killer cancer. David innocently approached the battlefield in obedience to His father's directive (vv.12ff), unaware of what laid ahead. Moved by the spirit who had prepared him for such an occasion, though still young and green, he took up the challenge against Goliath, in the name of YAHWEH. This is what king Saul and his army had failed in. What a great exploit!

Twice, as he approached the enemy, and as he vigorously returned, the king wondered who this young boy was, and probably, where he had been all the while.

Lesson: David wasn't the one who announced himself to the world; God's work in his hands, which we call exploits, announced him. Godly humility (not hypocrisy) demands that you don't blow your trumpet yourself. Let God and others do that for you. Remember: *Love* (the embodiment of God and godliness) *doesn't not parade itself, is not puffed up* (1 Cor.13v4b). So, aviod vain glory or self-glorification (Phil.2v3-4). Don't parade yourself. Let God's work in your hands and testimonies from others take care of that.

Of a truth, it is abnormal for one to recommend himself. He who does that is adjudged proud. It is others that should do your commendation and recommendation. Don't try to commend yourself. Even God doesn't like people who show off. It is nonsense!

PRAYER POINT:

1. Lord, devoid me of every iota of pride that can pitch me against You.

2. Holy Spirit, help me never to attempt blowing my own trumpet in any way.

3. Pray that God should help our brilliant children not to become proud because of the high IQs God has given them.

DO HAVE A BLESSED DAY
