SALT OF THE WORLD

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Job 9-12
TEXT: Genesis 40:1-8
1 It came to pass after these
things that the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt
offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the
chief butler and the chief baker.
3 So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of
the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined.
4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them,
and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.
5 Then the butler and the baker
of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a
dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s
dream with its own interpretation.
6 And Joseph came in to them in
the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were [a]sad.
7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officers
who were with him in the custody of his lord’s house,
saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”
8 And they said to him, “We
each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.”
So Joseph said to
them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me,
please.”
KEY VERSE:
“And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him
in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?” - Genesis 40:7
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Without Christ, the world is a deep pit of darkness
and bitterness.
THE MESSAGE:
The real litmus test of the Christian is
not his exploits within the confines of the church building or when he finds
himself amidst other believers. Whether in the temple or outside it, Christians
are to offer excellent service to the Lord at all times. God's enduring charge
is that His disciples must be the salt and the light of the world, and not of
the church alone.
Thrown into a dungeon as a common criminal
for rejecting a woman's proposal to be her sin partner, Joseph maintained his
probity by retaining the light and salt in him. Waking up one morning, he found
two fellow prisoners without the joy and life that salt and light offer. They
were filled with the sadness and darkness. He comforted them with the grace of
God in him.
Joseph was in the same dreary condition as
the two men. He too could look mournful. But he was not. What was responsible
for his cheerful outlook? His connection to God gave him the salt and light
Jesus spoke of. The believer must be salt and light to a hurting and dark world
by preaching the love of Christ and living like Him.
When we are the salt and light of the
world, we do not become part of the throng complaining bitterly about the
socioeconomic and political conditions around us. We do not allow them to drag
us low to the point of carrying placards in the streets to castigate the
government of the day. Instead, like Joseph, we reveal the joy of salvation in
us and show them the power of the God who can turn things around for their
good.
DO HAVE A BLESSED DAY
