HOW TO OVERCOME TEMPTATION

19^TH OCTOBER, 2021

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: John 9:1-41; John 10:1-21

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 4:14-16; James 1:13-15

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 

15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 

14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 

15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

THE MESSAGE:

Temptation is from three major sources: the devil, the world and the flesh. What is temptation? The desire to do or have something that you know is bad or wrong.

Temptation comes from evil desires within, not from God. It begins with an evil thought, it becomes a sin when we dwell on the thought and allow it to become an action. Sin grows more destructive the more we let it have its way.

Satan that tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden also came to tempt Jesus in the wilderness. What he does is always trying to get us to live in his own way, rather than God's way.

When you are tired, lonely, hungry, having emotional stress or faced with uncertainty, then comes the tempter. Remember when Jesus was tired, lonely etc, the tempter came. We should also remember that temptation itself is not sin but until when we give in and disobey God.

Anytime you make your physical needs, desires, possessions, power and pride to be your focus, you will be tempted by satan, man or yourself.

The best time to overcome temptation is when the spirit of self control in you is activated by the Holy Spirit. You can overcome before it is too late or before it gets out of control.

You can also overcome it by not hardening your heart. A hardened heart is as useless as a hardened lump of clay. When someone's heart becomes hardened, it will be very difficult to connect to God, thus creating a loophole for temptation to overwhelm him or her.

Beloved, before you can be free you must be able to deal with Mr Flesh, praying always, abiding in Christ and enduring in bad times. Always abide in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord will help you. Amen.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING

1. Thou power of temptation in my life, die, in the name of Jesus.
2. Every root of sin in my life, be uprooted and die, in the name of Jesus.
3. Lion of Judah, swallow my enemies, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING

4. By the power that made heaven and earth, you power of temptation in my life, die, in the name of Jesus.
5. Temptation acquired from my family, dry up and die, in the name of Jesus.
6. Blood of Jesus, set me free, in the name of Jesus.
7. Power to overcome, enter into my life, in the name of Jesus.
