LIVING WATER DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DELIGHTS AND DESIRES (I)

4TH , MARCH 2022

EXTRA READING FOR TODAY: Deuteronomy 16-19

READ: Psalms 37:1-9
1 Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.

2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.

4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret— it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth.

MEMORISE: "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart ." - Psalm 34:7

EXPOSITION Seeing that the human nature tends to bow to self-worship through the lusts of our sinful hearts, the promise on the latter half of this Psalms 37:4 when put in proper context, will help us to understand what it means to delight in the Lord, which is the key to having our heart desires (rightful things) fulfilled.

Solomon called the heart '...a wellspring of life...' (Prov. 16:22). In the biblical lands, cities like Jerusalem grew up around water supplies. No resources was more valued in the biblical lands than pure water from a spring or well, which is a symbol of life. The same is our heart, which must be kept pure always. So, when the Psalmist wrote and asked that you 'delight yourself also in the Lord', he is in no doubt saying that our heart must be kept pure and righteous, because only desires that come from a pure heart would God give answers to.

The Hebrew verb for "delight" (anag) is a command which charges us to find our enjoyment in Jehovah. Another Hebrew word for delight (chephets) means to bend toward or incline toward; a very fitting description of what our attitude should be towards the Almighty God. These meanings, put together, indicate that, to delight yourself in the Lord, you must bend towards His excellence, presence, help, mercies and compassion, and recline in His unfailing love for you. It is only when someone does that, that one can truly find enjoyment (delight) in whatever answer God gives in meeting one's desires. Usually, God give more than what we desire. Only those who truly delight in Him always appreciate and treasure His answers. Obey this simple command today, 'Delight yourself in the Lord', and the God you bend towards, shall fullfil your heart desires.
