MANTLE OR TITLE

READ:  2 Kings 4:29-31

 

29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up your loins and take my staff in your hand and go lay my staff on the face of the child. If you meet any man, do not salute him. If he salutes you, do not answer him.

30 The mother of the child said, As the Lord lives and as my soul lives, I will not leave you. And he arose and followed her.

31 Gehazi passed on before them and laid the staff on the child’s face, but the boy neither spoke nor heard. So he went back to meet Elisha and said to him, The child has not awakened.

EXPOSITION

Mantle symbolises the passing of authority from a superior to the subordinate. A king's mantle represents the king's authority, even if he is not physically present. Anyone can still call himself a king, but without the staff, it is mere self-acclamation. The crave for position and wealth, lack of vision, lack of self control, title-craze, etc. have led many into seeking titles of which demand they cannot bear.

       In today's passage, we read how Gehazi was given the mantle with specific instruction on how to use it; but it did not produce result. Whereas in a similar earlier situation, Elisha was not give any instruction as to use it, though he had been with Elijah and has seen him use it. The mantle in Elisha's hand produces result (2 kings 2v14).

        Today many do not realise that it is not being called a pastor, bishop, reverend and all sort of big names that proves how anionted they are, neither does it guarantee their godly exploits in their spheres of influence (c.f. Dan. 11v32). The title may give position, but the mantle makes you relevant in such a position. Do you have a spiritual Father and Mother divinely placed over you for doctrine, rebuke, correction, and instruction? Do you submit to the authority in your local church? Do you accept discipline with the right attitude? Have you carried that title for so long without corresponding results/impact?

        God wants you to live worthy of your calling. He has given every one a special ability to carry out that specific purpose into which He called us. Who you follow determines what follows you. Are you following Jesus wholeheartedly and faithfully? Examine your ways today. The time to be restored is now (2 Cor. 6v2).

 

 

PRAYER POINT:

1. Father Lord, expose any form of worldliness in me hindering me from following You wholeheartedly.

2. O Lord, deliver me from the peril of overfamiliarity with the things of God.

3. Pray for all ministers of God that the Lord will restore their lost authority so as to live worthy of their callings, and optimally fulfil purposes.
